Carry Around
handmade artists’ book
Carry around is a performative rendering of a spatial reading experience. It instinctively fumbles, disturbs, rediscovers, stirs through the fragment of Dionne Brand's A Map to the Door of No Return--Notes to Belonging(2001). The body is writing. Base on the book structure, it offers various pathway of reading. It orient, disoriented and reorient the body directions by flipping pages. Finding is holding, and vice versa. In Brand's word: "The road knows that wherever you find yourself/ you are".
This book is meant to accompany walking in the Deptford area, embedding bodily experience into a specific spatial location. However, it also welcomes reading that cross time and places, open for multiple encounters. As the reading paths and mapping routes are diverse and open. The book is a map, it does not just stay on the plane. Turn your hands up and down, left and right, between horizontal and vertical, your body as the coordinates of the sight. Imagine walking and reading like the tide, what it brought to us and what it waves away? Where do you find yourself?
